Aubrey Rutt, Garden Spot, sophomore, pitcher and first base

How did you get started playing softball, and what's that journey been like?

Rutt: My family has always been active. I also play volleyball, and my aunt, grandma, grandpa and mom have all played volleyball and softball, so it basically just ran in family.

How many siblings do you have, and do they have any impact on your sports?

Rutt: One younger sister, she also plays volleyball and softball. She's in eighth grade right now, and next year, she will be able to play varsity with me, and also varsity volleyball too. Yeah, I'm pretty excited to play with my sister. We don't get along as well, but she is still fun to play with as she lines up everything I do.

Does volleyball help you at softball and vice versa?

Rutt: Workouts, it does as it works out the same muscles, and I feel like agility wise, it helps me as it helps me run the bases a little faster. too.

Which do you consider your primary sport?

Rutt: I'm not sure yet. I've been told by my family members I'm better at softball than volleyball, but I'm still looking for colleges that offer both volleyball and softball, just in case I do switch.

What what are you excited about with this year's team?

Morales: I'm excited about how good the incoming ninth graders are as most of them were in rec ball. They were really good. They went to the championships in rec and I believe they won, but they were really good. I'm excited how great we came along together through open gyms and tryouts too. We don't have any seniors this year. No seniors, well, I have one junior, and the rest are underclassmen, actually.

How much did did you get to play last year as a freshman?

Rutt: I was their primary pitcher, so I got to play probably all the games. And if I did get out of pitching, I was either first or second base.

What's your favorite part of the game?

Rutt: My favorite part is the hype around the game as everyone's cheering. The teammates get along so well and that pitching is my number one thing in the sport, but mostly just how well the team gets around.

What have you added to your your own game since last season?

Rutt: I feel better prepared in both my pitching skills and first base, as I recently just hit a lower 50s (mph) in pitching. So I'm excited about that. And first base, I'm excited that I'm able to read the ball more, knowing that when it's high above me, or if it's low and I have to scoop it.

A couple of fun questions. What did you learn in class this past week,

Rutt: I've been learning about trigonometry and geometry, which I'm not a very big geometry person. I like algebra more, so it's been a little bad with that. But overall, I like all my classes, and I'm learning a lot actually.

And what do you have coming up this week?

Rutt: I think I have learning more about squares and, yeah, geometry. I'm also in a health class, which I can learn about different laws that the health professionals have to do, all the careers and academic stuff, which I also personally want to go into, which is very fun to learn about.

Did you have a favorite childhood toy that helped lead you into sports?

Rutt: I think it was probably like those little toy volleyballs, and they kind of led me into volleyball, but softball, I don't think so. I don't think I had a toy that led me into softball.

What number are you wearing? Did you get to pick it?

Rutt: I'm wearing number 15, as it's my mom's number. Last year, I was number 20 as it's my dad's number. So I normally either choose 15 or 20 as it's a family number. I did get to pick, as I am probably the top priority right now for choosing numbers, besides the one junior that we have,
